Vent Hood Inserts Are Enclosed By Custom Cabinetry Or Wood Shells
There are two main types of range hood inserts: wood hoods and bespoke cabinet hoods.
A wood hood is a constructed hardwood shell for range hood inserts that is specifically designed for use. Range hood inserts are also available that are pre-installed in the wood hood. To learn more about building a custom wood hood, check out my guide right here.
Custom hood insert cabinets, consisting of a wood frame covered with an attractive wood veneer, are also popular among homeowners.
Range hood inserts are great because they may give your kitchen a unique and seamless design. When it comes to kitchen cabinets, stainless steel and black aren't always the best options.
Most Inserts Can Be Installed Ducted Or Ductless
When deciding on range hood inserts, whether to go with ducted or ductless installation is an important consideration.
With the addition of a charcoal filter kit, nearly every manufacturer's range hood inserts may be converted from a ducted to a ductless configuration. To learn more about how ductless range hoods function, check out my comprehensive guide.
Prior to being recirculated back into the kitchen, the air is cleaned using a charcoal filter that comes with the filter kit. A grease filter is also required to catch the grease that is emitted while cooking.
Always go for ducting when you have the opportunity. This is the best option. Vent hood inserts with ducts will always perform better than ventless inserts, however there are situations when ventless is the better option.
Make Sure It Will Fit Into Your Wood Hood Or Custom Cabinet
This will be one of the most important factors when it comes to the range hood insert's size.
There are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing an insert for an existing wood hood or when building a bespoke cabinet: Build your own frame, and then find out that the range hood insert won't fit.
The range hood's width should be at least as large as your cooktop's. Having a range hood insert that is slightly broader than your range can trap even more exhaust gases.
CFM
Cubic Feet Per Minute is referred to as CFM. This is all about how much air a hood can move and how strong it is.
There are a handful of simple methods to get a baseline for how much power you need for your particular cooktop.
For an electric or induction stove, you just take its width in inches and multiply it by 10. In this case, if you have a 30-inch range, you'll need a 300 CFM exhaust hood (1030=300).
For a gas stove, you divide the total amount of BTUs by 100 to get the number of BTUs per square inch. If you have a 50,000 BTU gas stove, you’ll require a hood with at least 500 CFM (50,000/100=500).
That "at least" is there because there are several additional things that could require a little more power from your hood.
You may require more or less CFM depending on the size of your kitchen and the architecture of your ducting.
Cooking style and what you eat are other important factors. Deep-frying, high heat and smoke are all things you'll benefit from having more suction power and ventilation in your hood.
Filter Type
There are a few distinct configurations to be aware of when it comes to the way your hood filters and cleans the air.
First and foremost, we'll discuss baffle filters. Stainless steel is nearly always used, and they operate by separating oil from the air as it flows through. Because of its high airflow, baffle filters can remove more smoke and pollutants from the air than other choices.
Reusable mesh filters are another option. Several aluminum mesh layers are used in the construction of these items.
Grease is separated from air as it goes through mesh filters. As a result, the airflow and performance of the hood may be reduced. Finding a dishwashing machine-safe option here pays dividends once again.
Carbon or charcoal filters are the final filter type. A ductless hood necessitates the use of these filters, however mesh or baffle filters can be used in place of them. They capture oil and neutralize odors as they travel through, which is how they do their job. To put it another way, it's pre-cleaning the air before it returns to the kitchen.
Noise Level
If you don't use your hood enough, it could be because it's too noisy. Whether you're cooking, listening to music, or just thinking, you don't want an irritating fan competing with you.
Since most manufacturers publish a sound rating at the greatest fan speed, it's easy to know what to expect. Since the average speaking voice has a decibel level of 60, I like to use that as a benchmark for measuring hood noise.
Most range hoods fall within the 60-decibel range. Choosing a quiet hood is a wonderful approach to avoid a yelling match with your hood.
Mounting Height
Gas stove hoods should be mounted at a height of 24 to 30 inches above the stovetop. Electric and induction cooktops are much closer at 20 to 24 inches above the counter top. There should be a precise suggestion in each manufacturer's instruction manuals, however
Safety, efficiency, and overall performance will be taken into consideration by the manufacturer.
If you have a range hood insert, you may be limited by the height of the existing fixture. If your mount falls outside of the manufacturer's recommended height, it's best practice to contact the manufacturer's customer service to ensure that the hood will still operate at its optimum.
Filter Type
Keeping grease, smoke, smells, and other kitchen impurities out of the air is made easier with a range hood. Vent hood filters, which can be made of metal or charcoal, are effective at reducing kitchen air pollution. In ductless vent hoods, the filter is crucial for ensuring appropriate air circulation. Baffle filters, mesh filters, and charcoal filters are the most prevalent.
-
Filters with interlocking, three-sided baffles are extremely effective at trapping grease in the air they circulate. Stainless steel is a common material for these and they have the advantages of being long-lasting, easy to clean, and visually appealing. Although mesh filters are less expensive, baffle filters are superior at trapping grease.
-
Aluminum is a common material for mesh filters, which are made up of numerous layers of mesh. When the range hood is turned on, the layers of mesh capture grease and other impurities. Filters made of mesh have a shorter lifespan but are less expensive.
-
In conjunction with a baffle or mesh filter, charcoal filters are frequently employed to capture impurities and eliminate unpleasant odors. Since ductless range hoods recirculate air, they are more frequent. Charcoal filters can be added to ductless hoods to increase odor control when transitioning from a ducted model.
Features
Between one and six fan speeds can be found on most range hoods. Ideally, the fan should have at least two settings, allowing the user to cook at a higher speed while yet maintaining adequate ventilation thereafter. Despite the fact that some manufacturers boast a variety of speed settings, having more than three isn't really necessary.
Additional features are standard on the majority of range hoods. There are a variety of features available, depending on the model:
-
Kitchen safety is enhanced by range hoods that include built-in smoke alarms.
-
Using an exhaust timer, the fan will shut off after a predetermined period of time.
-
When they sense heat, temperature sensors in the range hood turn on the fan automatically.
-
LED lights in range hoods will save energy and will need to be replaced less often.
-
When the filter needs to be changed, the "Change filter" indicator lights will turn on.
-
It is possible to control your range hood via a smartphone or smart home system via Wi-Fi.
