Cleaning power (PSI and GPM), power source (gas or electric), and features all play a role in selecting the best pressure washer (engine, pump, accessories, etc.). Learn what to look for in each of these categories by reading the sections that follow.
PSI and GPM
Pressure (the force with which the hard water hits the surface) and volume are the two metrics used to gauge the power of pressure washers (how much water hits the surface). Gallons per minute (GPM) and pounds per square inch (PSI) are the units of volume and pressure, respectively (GPM). Pressure is required to break things up, and volume is required to wash them away, both of which contribute to the overall cleaning power.
Cleaning units, a third measurement, are also used by some companies (CU). The pressure washing business came up with this as an approximation of overall cleaning power, but it isn't a recognized unit of measurement. PSI and GPM are multiplied to arrive at the CU value.
You can get more done with greater cleaning power, but you can also get a lot done with less. Comparison of light, medium, and heavy cleaning power may be found in the table below.
Gas vs. electric
It is possible to power a pressure washer with either gasoline or electricity (using a motor). Many people disagree on the best form of energy, but the truth is that each has advantages and disadvantages. Compare the costs of gas and electricity in the table below.
Reliable engine or motor
Three sorts of engines exist: brandless, rebranded, and brand-named; and there are two types of motors, universal and induction, each of which has a distinct brand name attached to it (also known as brushless). The most reliable induction motors and engines are those made by well-known companies.
Reliable pump
Pressure washer pumps come in three varieties: wobble, axial, and triplex. In terms of pump reliability, axial and triplex pumps are the best (triplex is truly the greatest, but they're commonly found on commercial models owing to expense).
Type of Motor
Direct-drive motors outperform belt-driven counterparts in terms of power efficiency and are simpler to maintain. While belt-driven motors are cost-effective, they can be noisy. Furthermore, its upkeep can leave a hole in your wallet.
Power Type
There are advantages and disadvantages to using either a gas- or electric-powered pressure washer (as you will find in the reviews below). Because of its reduced maintenance requirements, increased efficiency, and lower total cost, electric heaters are ideal for household usage. Because gas-powered washers are more powerful, but also more expensive and require more care, we recommend them.
We recommend purchasing one of each type of washer.
Portable Vs Stationary
Because they are smaller and lighter, portable pressure washers are more convenient to transport. In your station wagon, you can drive to the customer's location for a short job. Instead, you may opt for a bulky, high-tech one that would take a pick-up truck to move.
If you're just getting started, it makes sense to go with a lightweight hybrid of a portable and stationary machine (less than 150 pounds).
Good fittings
Fittings (the parts and accessories that join each other) come in a variety of styles. The most reliable connections are made of metal (brass or steel), and quick-connects are the most convenient.
Detergent injection
Pressure washers that include detergent injection can either use a siphon or a tank on board, but not all do. Any method is preferable than none, however siphons are the most convenient.
Hot water
It is possible to find pressure washers with heating elements on the market. If you can afford it, using hot water instead of cold will considerably improve cleaning results.
How much does a pressure washer cost?
Starting at $100, pressure washers can quickly cost hundreds of dollars depending on the features you desire. Expect to invest $100-500 if you're searching for a home usage model. $500 and up is the price range for commercial use.
What is a good PSI for a pressure washer?
The ideal PSI for a pressure washer, in our opinion, is around 3,000 PSI. With the PSI and GPM table in mind, this is an ideal amount of power to tackle a wide range of tasks. Even though it's powerful enough to clean tougher surfaces, it's not so powerful that it damages delicate ones.
How Exactly Does A Pressure Washer Work?
To the surprise of many people, a pressure washer is a quite simple cleaning tool. Orifices or nozzles are used to direct the water into the pump, which is powered by an engine or motor that generates high pressure.
Garden hoses become more powerful with the help of this handy accessory. Dirt on your patio and driveaway may be quickly removed with this water-powered tool. Instead of cleaning by hand, use a pressure washer to clean your outdoor furniture, grill, siding, automobiles, and more.
So how does it accomplish these tasks with such ease? You'll notice an increase in water pressure once you attach a power washer to a hose, which is powered by either electricity or gas. The result is an 80-fold increase in water pressure compared to a garden hose.
This extraordinary force is capable of dislodging paint, obstinate dirt, and other such obstructions from a wide range of surfaces, greatly reducing the time and effort required to clean. You may get even more thorough cleaning with some pressure washers, which come with built-in detergent tanks and a spray.
Electric vs. gas pressure washer.. which is better?
Electric and gas-powered pressure washers can be found when looking for the ideal one.
When compared to gas-powered pressure washers, electric models are lighter, easier to use, quieter, and in certain cases, less expensive. A few years ago, you couldn't get an electric pressure washer that could handle more than 2,600 PSI. They've gone a long way. On the other hand, it's getting more and more usual to see versions that can reach 3,500 PSI on a regular basis.
Gas-powered pressure washers can be heavy, noisy, polluting, and difficult to handle because of their primer, choke, and pull-start methods. However, they have more power because of their heavy-duty engines and pumps. lithium-ion batteries have replaced older kinds since they don't have to learn complicated stuff like chokes, primers and pull starts. It's just as simple to get these newer versions up and running as it is to start an electric-powered model.
What do you think? Is it preferable to choose electric or gas? There is no one-size-fits-all response because it all depends on the individual.
However, the PSI (Pressure per Square Inch) and GPM (Gallons Per Minute) are critical (Gallons Per Minute). Professionals estimate that a pressure of 3,000 PSI at a flow rate of 4.0 GPM is needed to effectively eradicate mold from concrete and brick.
Pressure washers are great for eliminating mold from concrete or brick, but if that is your primary goal, you'll want to go for a model with 3,000 PSI. A flow rate of 2 or 2.5 gallons per minute will suffice in most cases, while 4 gallons per minute is not strictly necessary. Having a lower GPM means that you'll have to spend more time working.
We've shown you the top gas-powered pressure washers on the market. Using a pressure washer is both time-saving and cost-effective.
