Overview
To get the most out of your mountain bike, make sure your suspension is set up correctly. In order to properly set up your mountain bike suspension, you must first determine your'sag figure.'
Adjusting air pressure in a mountain bike shock is typically done by using a shock pump, which is required for most current shocks (our mountain bike rear suspension systems guide explains the differences). If we're talking about bikes, a high-pivot mountain bike would be something to consider.
A typical shock pump can pump up to 300 psi without straining the muscles or breaking the seal, compared to the greatest bike pumps.
Full-suspension mountain bikes and aftermarket suspension components, such as the best mountain bike suspension forks, typically come with complimentary shock pumps.
The best downhill mountain bikes and best trail mountain bikes used to come with them, but that has changed recently, so we decided to find out which one is the best.
We've compiled a list of nine shock pumps to give you an idea of what's out there. You should keep in mind that many of these pumps come from the same factory, and as can be seen from the key metrics, many of them have incriminating commonalities.
Each pump was evaluated in terms of ease of use, comfort, and build quality. In addition, Brady Kappius was hired to create a high-accuracy inline gauge specifically for our testing, so that the results could be replicated. Our industry-standard digital gauge now boasts a validated accuracy of one percent.
Check out our buyer's guide for more information on how a shock pump works and what to look for in a pump.

Gauge
Setting a starting point for your shock pump adjustments is made easier with this feature, which is one of the most critical components of the pump.
So long as you know how much air you need to fill your shocks in order to get a good sag reading, you'll have a much easier time repeating the process of setting up your suspension.
Small gauges fall short in this situation due to the difficulty of reading them and the potential for misreading the intended pressure due to the needle's and print's size.
According to Brady Kappius, president of Kappius Components, "there will always be some diversity in how the gauge is read from person to person." An further benefit of a digital gauge is its ability to boost precision.
It's well accepted that shock pump gauges are only accurate to within 3% to 5%, therefore for consistent results it's advisable to use the same pump each time.
We spoke with Josh Poertner, the CEO of pump company Silca, to discover more about the problems with gauge precision and accuracy.
"Accuracy, precision, and cost have a very non-linear relationship," he says. It's important to understand the difference between precision and accuracy.
To put it another way, how near are you to the bullseye when you're using a pressure gauge? "
"Precision is how repeatable your darts are. ' Inaccurate yet precise: if you can't always hit the 20 but can cluster your darts, you're a darts player. Like hitting the left of the bullseye three times in a row with good average accuracy but poor precision,"
As a preventative measure, Poertner recommends treating whatever you buy as a reference.
Keep a shock pump in a storage container and use it every time you need to adjust pressure, he advises. If you have a shock pump with you, use it on the trail."
Shock, vibration, and moisture can destroy any gauge, digital or otherwise. Be sure to protect your reference by keeping it clean, dry, and free of debris.
Body
The pump would not exist in the absence of a human body. When shopping for a pump, make sure it has a secure grip and is made of high-quality materials. Aluminium is a popular choice here for weight, strength and corrosion resistance.
Hose
A flexible high-pressure hose is standard equipment on nearly every shock pump on the market today. That said, some frames feature tighter clearance than others and so a longer hose can come in handy.
Valve head
Each and every one of these shock pumps is equipped with a Schrader valve (car valve).
When the pump is disconnected, some argue that air is released from the suspension, while others argue that the air is just leaving from the pump.
Special 'no-loss' valves are available on pumps from Birzman, Syncros, Topeak, and DT Swiss, while others claim to give no air loss but do not have this feature.
Bleed valve
If you have too much air in your suspension, you'll need a bleed valve to adjust it. The Syncros, in contrast to the majority of the pumps in our review, has a unique design that allows you to discharge little bursts of air.
With some pumps, the location of the bleed valve can be a nuisance, resulting in inadvertent discharges.
A Fox rear shock was inflated to 160psi using our inline gauge (from fully compressed). We counted the number of pump strokes it took to get to this pressure level.
In addition, we checked each pump's pressure reading against our certified gauge a number of times.
We've included photographs of each of the analogue gauges because of the variation in how they can be read.
Except for one, all of the pumps examined have a maximum pressure rating of 300 psi (20 bar).
Conclusion
As a result of this review, you'll be able to make an informed decision about the finest shock pump for your mountain bike.
As previously stated, the Pro bike tool shock pump is my go-to because of its low pricing and good features that are simple to operate.
Rockshox's High-Pressure Shock Pump, which comes in digital and analogue versions, is a close second.
Both types have been praised for their long-term reliability and consistency in performance.
The Giyo digital 600PSI MAX is the best choice if you are certain that a digital shock pump is what you need. Value for money, even though it's a little more expensive than some of the other options.
High-pressure and low volume are just two of many features of the shock pump that make it an excellent choice.
In the end, we recommend that you read the buyer's guide thoroughly to help you make an informed decision.
As with any other piece of equipment, the care you take with your shock pump will have a significant impact on how long it lasts and how well it works.
